I needed some actual content-y content that isn't griping. So, anyone who wants to, feel free to read about my trip to Liverpool and Penrith. My London musings are far less upbeat. I make a pretty crappy Tourist. I don't play sheep well.

19/3/05: 6:15-ish, The train from Liverpool to Penrith , England

The thing you don't think about, but which really seals is, is the pavement. Large paving stones. It wouldn't make you say, "Oh. The White City. Hey, look, gulls," nearly as much if there were concrete. Also, like Cinderella's Castle, the white isn't white (anymore). And statues of heroic heritage everywhere. Well, if you're only looking at from the Museum to the Lime St. Station, but, yeah, there are the Kindoms of Men. Right there. And, American, and rural American, at that, I can't help but ffeel rather like Pippin, scrambling up stairs not made for my legs.

Apart from the god-awful tower, the tallest things in town are the churches. Next, the birds that are tied to the water, as it lays heavy on the mind of the city. Then you move away from the old parts of town, and they have our high-rises, and you see everything Professor Tolkein feared.

The park by the Cathedral, lined with gravestones, was a green and growing place. Misty, in the way it needs to be to be older than the memory of my country. It is the sort of place where James & Lily's and Sirius' stones might be, where I would believe Gryffindors back to time immemorial were buried, before the pride and academia of the House...no. Family dominated. And where you could believe the earth itself could be enough to make magic.

Well, my feet hurt like Hell. Walked to 2 castles, 1 Roman fort, and lots of shops (eta: and and henge!)
Got Baa'ed at by a sheep just before coming to the bridge the highway took over a river, overlooking a fucking! Roman! Castle! I mean, I understand that there's not space to give every castle & fort & henge a wide berth, but, I mean, damn.

This entry is making me nostalgic for places I've never been.

Penrith, particularly, was one of those places that, when I got off the bus, almost immediately made sense to me. I think a good bit of it was how much England is inherent is so many of my favourite books, so I've been soaking in it most of my life.
