Dear Yuletide

I think I was pretty detailed, though hopefully not in a pushy way, in my details. So, I guess I'll talk a bit about why I like these "text"s, with the hope that it might be helpful.

1) Children of Men
What I loved about this movie...oh, my. Well, I loved that moment at the end, with the reverence for the baby, and then right back to the fighting. Yes, there are people who put their lives on the lines to help, but most people? Not so much. I loved the mundanity of the whole thing. I loved the pets as surrogate kids. I like the whole "making choices" theme.

2) Sandman
With Sandman, it's 2 things. First is the all-encompassing nature of the Universe. Everything is within this story: all the gods, all the dreams, all the stories. So, you've got all these different kinds of episodes within this larger tale. The second thing I love is the characters (yes, and the things that come out of their mouths or brains), how they're so specific, even the anthropomorphized representations of abstract concepts, rather than straight-up cliche.

3) Slings & Arrows
I love Shakespeare. I love theatre. I know most of these characters. But, really, I think most of it is that it's about a) the role of theatre in the world, which matters to me and b) what the plays are about. Fuck the gimmicks, all you need is a sheet of metal and the right actor, if you know what the play is about. Now, don't get me wrong, I could watch Paul Gross as Geoffrey all day (as I'm sure I will at some point), and I love Stephen Ouimette's Oliver (omg the skull. O.M.G.), but, well, the play's the thing, and all that.

4) Wonderfalls
It's kinda funny that I'm writing this while watching Pushing Daisies (I made a "pie" typo at one point), because they're so the same, and yet, so very not. I mean, yes, actor love for Lee Pace, and the eruditity, and the dark of the humor. I shouldn't like the characters, but I do. Even Jaye's unmotivated ass is compelling to me. I get her. I get them all, and I love that they're not perfect, nor are the "bad guys" unsympathetic. They're people. Just, painted with brighter colors. And Jaye has this big destiny thing, but, at the same time, it's not even really that big a destiny, just a somewhat freaky and utterly uncontrollable one. Maybe that's what I like about her. Something came along and said, "Yeah, you're going this way now." and she argues some, and she's irritated by it, especially by the not having a choice, and she tries to understand (as does her brother), but, at the same time, she wants to do the right thing. Of course, if you ask me tomorrow, I might tell you that, no, really, it's the words, and the funny, and the "your ass is ringing".
