I understand what you mean, Abi, though I am not in the same age group. Buffy would be about six years younger than me, so I often missed really relating to any of the characters' dilemmas. I think maybe that's why I always connected to Angel more--though Cordy was in theory the same age as Buffy, the rest of the characters were mostly older and the show felt older to me.

I'm in a funny age bracket, actually, somewhere between the cast of Friends and Buffy.

Still, the whole television shows creating personal mythologies resonates with me.
